In everyday language, people often still talk about Bakelite, whereas nowadays they usually mean Duroplast. Bakelite is the original material (a hard, brown-black plastic), invented in 1908. Duroplast only came later, in 1953. Like Bakelite, it is a thermosetting plastic: once hardened, it can no longer be reshaped by heat or other means. This makes Duroplast particularly durable and strong!
practically unbreakable
highly scratch-resistant
easy to clean
antibacterial
heat-resistant
UV-resistant
very hard and rigid
lightweight despite its strength
Thanks to these properties, Duroplast is ideal for products that are subject to frequent use and where hygiene is important, such as toilet seats.
