Acetic acid (systematically: ethanoic acid) is a weak acid with a characteristic, penetrating smell. Its chemical formula is CH3-COOH (sometimes also H3C-COOH). Pure, water-free acetic acid is also called glacial acetic acid, a colourless liquid, which solidifies into clear, colourless crystals at temperatures below 17°C (hence the name 'glacial acetic acid').
